The word isotonic is composed of the Greek words "isos" (equal) and "tonos" (tension) and can be translated as "of equal tension".
A drink is isotonic if it has approximately the same concentration of electrolytes as your blood. If a drink has more electrolytes than blood, it is called hypertonic. If it has less, it is hypotonic.
