Vitamin D3 & K2 – An important combination for bones, muscles and the immune system
Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 complement each other in their function and are jointly involved in many processes in the body. Both vitamins work together particularly in maintaining healthy bones, muscle function and the normal functioning of the immune system.
Vitamin D – The “Sunshine Vitamin”
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that the body largely produces itself – but only with sufficient UV-B radiation. In the months of October to March, the sun's intensity in Central Europe is usually not sufficient to synthesise enough Vitamin D through the skin. Foods such as fatty fish, eggs or mushrooms contain some Vitamin D, but usually only cover 10–20% of the daily requirement. Supplementation can be useful here.
The recommended guideline for adults according to the German Nutrition Society (DGE) is 20 µg (800 IU) per day. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) sets the tolerable upper limit for adults at 100 µg (4,000 IU) per day.
An optimal blood level for the 25-hydroxyvitamin D marker is approximately 75 nmol/l. Values below 30 nmol/l are considered critical.
Functions of Vitamin D in the body
Among other things, Vitamin D contributes to:
- normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus,
- the maintenance of normal bones and teeth,
- normal muscle function,
- a normal function of the immune system,
Vitamin K2 – Directing calcium specifically
Vitamin K2 also belongs to the fat-soluble vitamins and is relevant for calcium transport in the body. It activates so-called Gla proteins, which transport calcium specifically into bones and muscle tissue while also regulating deposition in blood vessels. Good sources include animal products and fermented foods such as sauerkraut or natto. The body's own production by gut bacteria is usually not sufficient to meet the requirement.
The interaction of Vitamin D3 & K2
Vitamin D stimulates the formation of transport proteins that bind calcium in the body – Vitamin K2 activates these proteins so that calcium can be specifically incorporated. Both vitamins thus complement each other in calcium metabolism and are particularly relevant for maintaining bone health.
A combined intake, for example via D3-K2 drops, can be useful – especially during periods of low sunlight exposure or when there is an increased need.
Overdosing: What to consider?
High doses of Vitamin D should only be taken after a doctor-verified blood test. An overdose of Vitamin D can be harmful, especially if it leads to excessive calcium concentration in the blood long-term. The recommended daily dose should not be exceeded.
