But Turmeric is more than just a trendy spice. InAyurvedic teachings, it has been celebrated as a medicinal plantfor thousands of years. What's in Turmeric – and why isthat good for you?
The special thing about Turmeric is its active ingredient Curcumin,a so-called curcuminoid. This secondary plant compound is responsible forits vibrant colour – and for most of its health benefits. Curcumin has an antioxidanteffect, meaning it protects your cells from oxidative stress, which canbe caused, for example, by intense workouts, UV radiation, or environmental pollution.
If you exercise regularly, your body is often confronted with freeradicals. This is where Turmeric comes in: Curcumin binds these aggressiveparticles and can help keep cells in balance. The result? Lessinflammation, faster regeneration, and a strengthened immune system.

However, the effects don't appear overnight. It takes a littlepatience: With daily, consistent intake, you might notice initial effectsafter a few weeks. Important: Food supplements do not replace a healthy lifestyle; they are only a support.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)recommends a maximum of 3 mg of Curcumin per kilogram of body weight perday. This corresponds to approximately 210 mg daily– ideally organic quality. The absolute upper limit is 3grams per day.
Are there any side effects? Yes, butonly with overdosing
If you consume too much Turmeric in concentrated form –for example, via supplements – it can affect your digestion.Bloating or stomach discomfort are then possible. Especially if yourgut flora is sensitive, you should stick to the recommended dosage.
Also be careful with medications such as blood thinners:Curcumin can interact with these. If you regularly take medicationor have pre-existing health conditions, seek medical advice beforetaking high-dose Turmeric.
When is it better to avoid?
During pregnancy or breastfeeding,you should not take Turmeric supplements – simply because there isno conclusive data yet. Caution is also advised for liver problems.
